Dorcas Seabury Soule, mother of eleven children, captured a British spy during the American Revolution. One day, a stranger came to the family home at Tiverton Four Corners, requesting food. Dorcas became suspicious when, upon being asked his name, the stranger replied, “Touch me not.” Dorcas had seated the stranger with his back to the door, so thinking quickly, she went out to the family barn, got some horse reins, and used them to tie him up from behind. Both she and her husband received a commendation from colonial authorities for the capture.
